Why Your Company Should Get a Corporate Membership at Club One Fitness

A study by American Sports Data found that workers who frequently exercise were absent from work only 2.11 days per year, compared to 3.06 days for inactive individuals.  So you get 50% less absenteeism if you have employees that workout regularly.

If you are company in Severna Park and Millersville, think about investing in your employees in a way that is bound to come back to you in a good way.  Call Club One Fitness at 410-729-3900 and find out the type of corporate Club One Fitness plans we have available for your company.

Why Do I Love the Treadmill?

Because I might get old one day. A Stanford researcher did a study in which he looked at 500 runners for 20 years.   Among the findings of the study were that runners had fewer disabilities, remained active much longer and were half as likely to die early deaths.

Obviously, running as you get older comes with challenges.  Sometimes, people in unbelievable shape are required to stop running because of the toll it can take on your legs (usually knees).  Certainly, there are other forms of exercise that can be just as valuable.  Running has such great appeal because it is is an easy way - if you can excuse the oxymoron - to exercise intensely.  It is not as easy for most of us to get our heart rate as high on the bike or crosstrainer than it is on the treadmill.

Moral of the story: if you can run, RUN.

Interval Training: A New Study

Check out this study:  Eight people performed between four and six 30-second bursts of "all out" (no one defines an 'all out" burst) cycling separated by 4 minutes of recovery during each training session. The other eight subjects performed 90-120 minutes of continuous moderate-intensity cycling each day. Total training time commitment including recovery was 2.5 hours in the sprint group, whereas the endurance group performed 10.5 hours of total exercise over two weeks.

You can drive a mack truck through the difference in time.  But both groups showed largely similar improvements in both performance and muscle parameters associated with exercise.

The conclusion of all of this is stunning: you can get more done in 1/4 the time by doing interval training.   Of course, I would like a better definition "moderate intensity" too.  I wish we knew the relative heart rates of the subjects.  Still, an interesting study.  Because when you walk into a gym and look at the cardio equipment, few people are doing interval training.

Amateur Bout Results

Congratulations to Sherman Artis, Dan Cannaday and Nick Kisner for winning last night on Mike Pachall's amateur boxing card at Michael's Eighth Avenue!  This was Dan's first time stepping in the ring and will be Nick's last time stepping in the ring as an amateur!

Exercise Keeps You Young

Chance are if you are reading this you appreciate that exercise is efficacious.  But can it help you maintain your youth and, if so, to what extent?  This study underscores what most fitness professional have been saying for 20 years: exercise makes you younger

This study compared subjects who did not exercise to elite runners.  As it turns out, the differences are reflected in the cells.  Cells for the runners looked much younger under a microscope.Specifically, researchers analyzed the length of cells.  When a cell divides, it gets smaller.  When they get too small, they divide and die.

The cells of runners are long and more in tact.  Next time you are working out hard, motivate yourself by thinking of how your cells are staying long.
