Chocolate Milk and Fitness

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Healthy eating is confusing.  We have been hearing now for a while that milk is bad.  We are the only species that keeps drinking milk, blah, blah, blah.  Now a new study that chocolate milk drinkers see great improvements in their aerobic fitness levels compared to a control group on a carbohydrate drink or water.

I don't know what to make of this.  Is chocolate milk good for you?   One thing to keep in mind: this University of Texas study was co-sponsored by the Milk Processor Education Program.  So they certainly have some skin in the game.  So who knows?  But who knows?

The Battle with Cellulite

"I have been working out for weeks and I am losing weight, but I see more cellulite!  What does that mean?"

Cellulite is the bane of so many and it is further a frustration if the more one works-out the more prominent the rippling effect seems to become.  Cellulite is dimpled fat that we still don't know much about.  It can be caused by genetic factors, activity level, and diet, but is commonly seen in overweight women.

What research has shown is that while you may be seeing overall body weight changes, stubborn thigh fat may continue to hold on and be the last area in which fat-loss occurs.  This research was mainly conducted with women who had used a fad-diet, liquid diet, or bariatric surgery for fat-loss and not women who were active.  We have seen that cardio-intense workouts can greatly increase fat-loss and lessen the amount of cellulite on the body.  However, it is important to remember that cardio must be varied and the amount of time must be increased, over a period of time (up to 6 months to a year) in order for someone to begin to see fat-loss and cellulite reduction.

So, hit the tredmill, add some road work, or come take a boxing class to increase the amount of calories expelled in a session.  Let's keep your body guessing and let's win this battle, ladies!

Why Do I Love the Treadmill?

Because I might get old one day. A Stanford researcher did a study in which he looked at 500 runners for 20 years.   Among the findings of the study were that runners had fewer disabilities, remained active much longer and were half as likely to die early deaths.

Obviously, running as you get older comes with challenges.  Sometimes, people in unbelievable shape are required to stop running because of the toll it can take on your legs (usually knees).  Certainly, there are other forms of exercise that can be just as valuable.  Running has such great appeal because it is is an easy way - if you can excuse the oxymoron - to exercise intensely.  It is not as easy for most of us to get our heart rate as high on the bike or crosstrainer than it is on the treadmill.

Moral of the story: if you can run, RUN.

Exercise Keeps You Young

Chance are if you are reading this you appreciate that exercise is efficacious.  But can it help you maintain your youth and, if so, to what extent?  This study underscores what most fitness professional have been saying for 20 years: exercise makes you younger

This study compared subjects who did not exercise to elite runners.  As it turns out, the differences are reflected in the cells.  Cells for the runners looked much younger under a microscope.Specifically, researchers analyzed the length of cells.  When a cell divides, it gets smaller.  When they get too small, they divide and die.

The cells of runners are long and more in tact.  Next time you are working out hard, motivate yourself by thinking of how your cells are staying long.

Employee Wellness Programs

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that employers are not holding back on investing in health and wellness plans for its employees.

Why is health and wellness for employees apparently recession proof?  Did you renew your health insurance this year?  Most companies - including Club One Fitness as of last month are spending more and more (and more) on health related costs.  Employers are starting to look at the big picture and invest more in the health of their employees.

At Club One, we are in a huge office complex right off of Route 97 on Benfield Road.  Let's be honest: the recession has not been good to us.  But more and more companies are getting their employees and paying for or subsidizing their health club memberships.  This is a great development for us and a great development for keeping employee costs down by having healthier employees.

Senior Citizen Self Defense Class: A Great Idea

The Milford Senior Center in Michigan is offering a cool opportunity for seniors to get a quick tutorial on self defense tactics on May 12 for a cost of a whopping $5.

"Eye Fight Back" is a self defense program which combines techniques used by police officers, military personnel and professional boxers. Developed by a group of family members who have backgrounds in the U.S. armed forces, boxing and law enforcement, Eye Fight Back is said to build confidence, teach people defense skills and improve physical fitness.

I have not seen anything like this in Maryland.  It is something we should consider doing at Club One Fitness.
